Lumber Selection & Tips

📏 Actual vs Nominal

Lumber dimensions are nominal. A 2x4 actually measures 1.5" × 3.5". Always use actual dimensions for calculations.

🌲 Wood Species

SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir) is most common for framing. Southern Pine and Douglas Fir are stronger but cost more.

💧 Moisture Content

Kiln-dried (KD) lumber is more stable but costs 10-15% more. Green lumber shrinks as it dries.

📊 Lumber Grades

Stud grade is sufficient for most framing. Construction grade has fewer defects but costs more.

📦 Ordering Tips

Order 10% extra for waste. Buy from the same lot when possible to ensure consistent color and grain.

🏪 Cost Savings

Bulk purchasing, off-season buying, and shopping multiple suppliers can save 20-30% on costs.
